The City of Heidelberg

Amidst the hills of Königstuhl and Heiligenberg, Heidelberg is spread out along the river Neckar, in the South west of Germany. The panorama of the city is dominated by the famous castle ruin, situated on the steep Königstuhl above the old town of Heidelberg. As the city escaped bombing during the 2nd World War, most of the old buildings remain, and Heidelberg preserved the character of a medieval town. This is part of the attractiveness which draws approx. three million tourists from all over the world to Heidelberg each year. Besides the town's beautiful natural setting and its historic sights, Heidelberg offers its visitors numerous leisure activities such as cinemas, theatres, concerts, museums, cabaret and countless student bars.

Heidelberg University

The Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, founded in 1386, is the oldest university of Germany. Situated in the beautiful old city of Heidelberg, the university is still one of the leading centres of academic education in the country.

Today the university has more than 27,000 students, including about 5,600 international students, and is an important centre of modern research and teaching in Germany. The 12 university faculties encompass a wide variety of subjects in the humanities, sciences and medicine.
