School attendance is mandatory for all children between the ages of 6 and 15 living in Germany. There is a large variety of schools here – public schools, private schools, church-run schools, boys or girls schools, comprehensive schools, elementary and secondary schools. Depending on how much time your children will be spending in Germany, you will be required to either register them at a local school or have them declared exempt from mandatory school attendance. This is decided on a case to case basis.

In the Downloadcentre, you will find a leaflet about the German school system as well as an address list for the various schools in Heidelberg. Information about the individual schools and types of schools is also provided by the:

Supervisory School Authority for the City of Heidelberg (Staatliches Schulamt für den Stadtkreis Heidelberg)
Friedrich-Ebert-Platz 3, 69117 Heidelberg, Telefon: 06221/58-32011 und 58-32012

After-school care is also available for school children at many Heidelberg schools and usually includes a warm midday meal, homework supervision and various fun activities. As these services are provided by outside organizations, fees are charged.

We are happy to help you to locate suitable schools for your children. We recommend that you contact us as soon as possible if you have school-age children.
